Never Ruin Another Sketchbook: How to Use Gesso for Oil Painting

Prepping a sketchbook for oil painting with gesso is a simple process that will help ensure that your paintings turn out beautifully and the sketchbook pages are well protected. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to do it:

  1. Choose a sketchbook that is suitable for oil painting. Look for one that has heavy, acid-free pages, as this will prevent the oil paint from soaking through and damaging the pages beneath.

  2. Gather your materials. You will need gesso, a palette knife, a small container for mixing the gesso, and a paintbrush.

  3. Mix the gesso according to the instructions on the package. Gesso is typically mixed with water in a 1:1 ratio, but it's always best to follow the specific instructions for your particular brand.

  4. Apply the gesso to the pages of your sketchbook. Use the palette knife to spread a thin, even layer over the surface of each page. Be sure to cover the entire page, including the edges, as this will prevent the paint from soaking through and damaging the pages beneath.

  5. Allow the gesso to dry completely. This can take anywhere from a few hours to a full day, depending on the humidity and temperature of your environment.

  6. If you want to further protect your pages from oil paint seeping through, you can apply multiple layers of gesso. Simply allow each layer to dry completely before applying the next. Keep in mind that adding more layers of gesso will also increase the thickness of the surface, which may affect the way your paint goes on and the finished look of your painting.

  7. Once the gesso has dried, your sketchbook is ready to use for oil painting. Begin by sketching out your composition with a pencil, and then proceed to paint as you normally would.

Some artists prefer to apply just one or two layers of gesso, while others may apply three or more. It's really a matter of personal preference and what works best for your particular needs. Experiment with different numbers of gesso layers to see what works best for you.

In general, it's always a good idea to protect your pages from oil paint seeping through, especially if you're using a sketchbook with thin or delicate pages. By applying multiple layers of gesso, you'll create a barrier that will help prevent the paint from soaking through and damaging the pages beneath.

By prepping your sketchbook with gesso, you'll create a surface that is suitable for oil painting and will help ensure that your paintings turn out beautifully.

Happy creating!
